Embarkation Day Tips
What Not to Do on Embarkation Day

Embarkation day is a blend of excitement and the occasional hiccup, especially for first-time cruisers. Setting sail on your maiden voyage can lead to a few hiccups, but with proper organization and preparation, you’ll start your cruise journey with ease. Furthermore, there are some essential actions you’ll want to take in the initial hours after boarding.
In this post, we’ll help you steer clear of common embarkation day blunders, share invaluable cruise tips, and sprinkle in some tricks along the way to make your cruise experience even more delightful.
1. Your CRUISE DOCUMENTS:
So many people do not read the terms and conditions of travel! Make sure that you print out your documents on SINGLE SIDED PAPER! Never print them on both sides – you will end up forking out hundreds of Rands to reprint on the day!
You MUST have all your documents with you in your hand luggage and NOT in your checked-in luggage! If you do, then I guess your bags will go on a nice cruise without you and you will not be entitled to a refund!
Passports: Every person including babies needs one. Not only that, but they need to have a minimum of 6 months validity after your return.
Make sure that if required that you have visas for the country you are visiting
Un-abridged birth certificates for ALL children U18.
Children with only 1 parent need an affidavit signed at a police station by the other parent with certified copies of their passport/s
Health certificates when advised by your agent.
If you travel on the MSC shuttle with us, we arrange everything for you so as to save you time in the check-in queue.
Don’t be that “jerk” holding up the works for 40 minutes!
2. Your LUGGAGE:
If you are traveling with us on the official MSC shuttle then we ask you NOT to attach your luggage labels, and to print them out on single sided paper. – We will do all that for you, and make sure that you are ‘good to go’!
3. Muster Drill Attendance:
A crucial step often overlooked is attending the muster drill and safety check-in. Completing this compulsory and vital task under marine laws, takes mere minutes and must be done before the sail-away party. Waiting can lead to reminders over the ship’s intercom. Don’t procrastinate; be an early bird! MSC have however improved this compulsory drill. You now only have to watch the presentation in your cabin then phone in to a certain number to confirm you saw it – done!
4. Early Boarding:
Debates on check-in times aside, early arrival grants you more time to savor your first day. While some opt for later check-ins to avoid lines, waiting is often inevitable, even with a later appointment. Boarding early affords you a relaxed lunch, a leisurely exploration, and an uncrowded poop deck. Travelling with the official MSC Shuttle operated by CSA, we take care of the essentials and you get to board a lot quicker!
5. Cabin Check:
The first order of business upon boarding is a quick cabin check. Drop off your carry-on luggage and ensure everything in the cabin is functioning as it should. Don’t forget to snap some photos and videos of your pristine cabin—this moment won’t last. If you intend to use the mini bar in your cabin, you will want your drinks cold. I suggest using a shopping card or a partners cruise card and leave it in the electric slot by the door so that your fridge will stay cool. Do turn your lights off though!
6. Embarkation Day Bag:
Don’t forget to pack a carry-on bag with essentials, as it may take several hours for your checked luggage to reach your cabin. Include valuables, electronics, medications, and a change of clothes to make waiting for your luggage stress-free.
7. Meet Your Cabin Attendant:
Take a moment to meet your cabin steward. They’ll introduce themselves and inquire about any special requests you might have. Don’t hesitate to ask for extra hangers, towels, or daily ice refills. Keep in mind that embarkation day is hectic for them, so please be patient.
8. Pre-download Cruise Line App:
Download the cruise line’s app before you board to access daily planners, menus, and excursion details. Onboard downloads can be cumbersome due to slow Wi-Fi.
9. Airplane Mode for Your Phone:
Ensure your phone is in airplane mode to avoid expensive roaming fees. You can still use cruise ship Wi-Fi in airplane mode.
10. Alternative Dining Options:
Instead of joining the rush at the buffet, check for other open dining options, including the main dining room, casual restaurants, or specialty restaurants with reduced embarkation day prices. Avoid the buffet crowds and enjoy a more peaceful meal.
11. Reservations for Shows and Restaurants:
If your cruise ship requires reservations for shows and restaurants, make them as soon as possible. Don’t leave it to the last minute.
12. Main Dining Room Expectations:
Don’t set unrealistic expectations for perfection on the first night in the main dining room, especially during open or anytime dining. Consider trying a specialty restaurant for a less crowded and more enjoyable experience.
13. Register Your Kids for the Kids Club: Ensure you register your children for the kids’ club on the first day, as the initial “open house” is essential for making friends. It can be challenging for latecomers to fit into established friend groups.
14. Avoid Guest Services on Boarding Day:
Guest services will have long lines on embarkation day. Unless it’s an urgent issue, try visiting them at night or early on day two to save time.
15. Embrace Sail-away:
The moment of sail-away marks the true beginning of your cruise adventure. Wait for the 3 blasts of the horn which is your ship saying farewell to other ships. Whether you join the sail-away party or savor it from your balcony, take a few moments to appreciate the start of your vacation. Leave your daily stresses on the shore.
Bonus Tip:
Unpack and Feel at Home: Unpack your belongings to fully enjoy the benefits of cruising. Hang up your clothes, use packing cubes, and place your items on the shelves and in the drawers. Consider sending any items that require pressing to the ship laundry on embarkation day.
Set the tone for a fantastic cruise by avoiding these embarkation day pitfalls. Smooth sailing and bon voyage!
